Happy Chinese Year of The Rabbit

Inline Image

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, which began on February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is a lucky sign.

According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation. Don't try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail.

To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children.

Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise.

Sounds like 2011 will be the perfect year to communicate with your target audience and clients.  Let them know who you are, what you do and why you are the best person to look after their needs.

There are many ways you can do this - good old fashioned face to face meetings, via newsletters (like this!), via Facebook, Twitter , LinkedIn or YouTube.  YouTube is the latest way to keep people in the loop with what you are doing.  This newsletter focuses on how you can use YouTube to help your business.

One thing we are doing differently this year is holding an Open Day to demystify the web for you.   You are welcome to come along at any stage during our open time and we will answer any questions you have regarding websites, hosting, search engine optimisation, social media and any other burning topics that have had you bamboozled.

If you have ever wondered what works goes on behind the scenes, this is your chance.  We will show you how we use PhotoShop to design a site, how we "cut up" a design to make it web friendly, what we do to improve your website rankings and lots more. We will have mini talks on the hour and there will be prizes up for grabs throughout the day.

Click here to register your interest today to attend our Open Day on Wednesday 23 February between 10am and 4pm. Let us know what time you intend to visit and be prepared to learn!

Is Your WordPress Site Vulnerable?

Inline Image

According to WordPress News if your website was released prior to the latest version then your site is potentially vulnerable to a cross-site scripting issue. The current WordPress release is version 3.0.4 that was released on 29 December 2010.

The article on the WordPress website advises "this is a very important update to apply to your sites as soon as possible because it fixes a core security bug...I would rate this release as "critical"."

Another article advises that cross-site scripting (XSS) "attacks can be used to steal login information or other sensitive information from visitors to a particular site."

One of our client's has already experienced an issue with their website.  A malicious script was inserted into their website.  Google detected this attack and emailed us as their webmaster advising that the website may have been compromised.

We confirmed the presence of the script and removed it.  By adding the new WordPress patch, any further attacks should be prevented.

Not sure if your site is vulnerable? Call us today on 9200 4431 and let us check it out for you.

YouTube For Business

Inline Image

The first YouTube video was entitled Me at the Zoo, and shows founder Karim at the San Diego Zoo. The video was uploaded on April 23, 2005, and can still be viewed on the site.

Now more than 100 million videos are viewed each day and YouTube is one of the top 5 search engines in the world.

YouTube provides an easy medium to present information. Some ideas for videos include:

  • Presentations – the next time you do a presentation, film it. You can then use this to show to people who could not make the presentation or as a sales message if you were showcasing your company
  • Training – this is a perfect way to train workers or clients on how to use your products. You can easily capture screen shots, complete with mouse clicks so the viewer can copy exactly how to complete a task
  • Help desk – if you continually receive the same requests for assistance, film a “How To” video that you can direct clients to. Much easier than trying to explain over the phone how to set up appliances!
  • Marketing – a picture says a lot more than a page of text. Showcase your products to the world. YouTube videos are very easy to share via social media and email – you never know – your product could go viral like the BlendTech video
  • Events – if you are holding an event that you would like all your staff to see or that you would like to share with the world – film it and then upload to YouTube

You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy equipment. A couple of hundred dollars will get you a good camera that will easily upload direct to YouTube.

You also don’t need to be the world’s best filmmaker either. The basic tips are simple and fairly obvious: don't move the camera too much, don't zoom in and out a lot, and make sure you have appropriate lighting.

We have worked with insilico now for the last year or so. We have recommended them to our own clients. We had an out-of-date looking website that was difficult to update and maintain. Our Google listings were poor even though we had registered with Google Ad-words.

We signed up to a web maintenance plan with insilico and were impressed with quick friendly service we received. In no time we had started to receive good listings on Google.

insilico also redesigned our website based on a basic plan and idea we had. We were impressed by how quickly the site was completed and with the new look and feel.

Closing Thoughts

We are looking forward to our Open Day on 23 February as this will give us an opportunity to showcase the work that we do and the skill sets that our team have.

Our team are also excited about the prospect of getting to meet more of the people we work with.  It is always much better to put a face to a name, voice or email!

If for some reason you are not available on our Open Day but would still love the chance for a behind the scenes tour of what we do, email us at admin@insilico.com.au.  If there is enough interest, we may arrange another time or we may arrange a private tour just for you.

Please feel free to forward our email on to anyone you think might like to attend our Open Day.  The more the merrier!!

Our quote for February is a Chinese Proverb:

"Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still."

Best regards,
Naomi and Paul
